January 3, 2018 – 7:45 PM
Gateway Recreation Center
That’s right, you read that headline correct, The Tullinge TP Hockey Club from Sweden was in Winnipeg from December 26th until January 7th taking in the sights of our great city and playing some great hockey against some of our Bantam AA teams. A big thank you goes out to Scott Wiley for taking the lead on this and organizing the team’s itinerary, finding them activities to take part in and scheduling them some practices and games throughout the 10 days. The team even got to take part in some action at the Iceplex against some of the tournament teams they had in the Jets AA Showdown. We would also like to extend a big thank you to our Billet families from the Rebels, Vics and Marauders for hosting players in their homes for the duration of the trip. It created a once in a lifetime opportunity for not only Sweden but also for our Bantam players.
The Marauders hosted Tullinge TP at Gateway on the 3rd for an excellent exhibition game. The Marauders organization and team made this a first class event. The Swedish and Canadian anthems were played before the game and the players were introduced by their coaching staffs. The Past President of REMHA, Garth Nolan took part in in the honorary puck drop prior to the game. “It was a full house at Gateway and was a great event for our community”, said Bruno Zarillo, President of REMHA. Before the action got under way, the Marauder team exchanged a gift with each of the Sweden players.
The first period saw some even end to end action for both teams, with Sweden thinking they got the first goal of the game, but was disallowed by the officials due to a penalty being called on the play. With about 5 minutes left in the first period, Sweden managed to take the 1-0 lead with a nice goal by # 18. With some close calls and some great chances to finish the period, the score remained 1-0 for Sweden.
The second period saw both teams add one to their score. It was a hard fought period for both teams right up until almost the end of the period where at 2:43, Sweden’s # 9 put them up 2-0. Only 40 seconds later, the Marauders closed the gap with a shot from # 65 from the point. Going in to the final period, the Swede’s lead the Marauders by a score of 2-1.
In the third period, the Sweden team really started to show the skills and their dangles! Sweden added two goals to their score with goals from # 10 half way through the period and from # 14 with only a couple minutes left. The Marauders # 55 potted one for their team half way through the third period as well. Tullinge TP took this one by a score of 4-2.
Again, a big thank you to all those involved in setting up this game as well as making the Sweden teams trip to Winnipeg a memorable one!
