Female Hockey Fights Cancer

TWO TOP WINNIPEG GIRLS’ TEAMS FACE OFF FOR

‘FEMALE HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER’ GAME

St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep vs. Winnipeg Avros hit the ice on October 18, 2014

WINNIPEG, MB – The St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep team face off against the Winnipeg Avros at the 2nd annual Female Hockey
Fights Cancer (FHFC) game in support of CancerCare Manitoba. Game time is 2:30 p.m. on October 18, 2014 at the Selkirk
Recreation Complex, 200 Eaton Avenue, Selkirk, MB.

Both of these top Manitoba teams have players that are sought after in University programs around North America. All four of the
grade 12 girls on the Flames Prep team have already been scouted and signed to leading Universities upon their graduation in 2015.
Team Captain Meike Meilleur has committed to Penn State, Forward Christian Higham is off to Cornell, Kate Mackenzie (Defence) &
Randi Marcon (Forward) are both committed to Quinnipiac University.
Game organizers Dennis Park and his wife Melanie are passionate about both minor hockey and the fight against cancer. Dennis says
“Manitobans love hockey and this game is an opportunity for people to do something good for the community while enjoying a top
level minor hockey game.” Dennis goes onto say “Anyone that has not seen girls play at this tier need to come out and watch, the
finesse and speed of these players is really something amazing.”

Last year’s FHFC game raised over $17,000 for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and game organizers hope to top that number
this year. CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Events Manager Kate Gameiro says, “Events such as this are beneficial to CancerCare
Manitoba Foundation because of the direct support of individuals and companies in the community. We greatly appreciate the
support!”

St. Mary’s Academy President, Connie Yunyk says, “At St. Mary’s Academy our mission is to form young women in spirit, mind and
body; this hockey game encapsulates two very important elements – sport and service. We are delighted to be a part of this
worthwhile cause and we look forward to watching a terrific hockey game.”

Individual tickets are $5.00. Available at St. Mary’s Academy, from each team member of the Flames and Avros and from Dennis and
Melanie Park: depark4@gmail.com. People can also help out by donating new or gently used hockey equipment at the game. All
equipment donors will be entered for a chance to win great prizes.

The FHFC game is an initiative of Hockey Winnipeg. Don McIntosh, Hockey Winnipeg’s President states that “We believe that all
game participants will, unfortunately, be touched at some time in their life through a family member or friend with a cancer
diagnosis. The education and experience these players will gain through their contribution to the FHFC game both on and off the ice
is important to their personal development.”

The St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep team is a Hockey Canada accredited Sport School team. The Winnipeg Avros play in the
Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League.

For all media inquiries, and accreditation passes to the game, please contact SMA Communications Coordinator Gina Borkofski at
gborkofski@stmarysacademy.mb.ca, 204‐478‐6046 (office) or 204‐479‐1766 (cell).
