Beginner 3-Official Course: Referee

Location: Virtual, a link will be emailed to you 1-week before your course.

Dates & Times: This course will be run twice:

November 14, 2024, 7pm-10pm

January 11, 2025, 9am-12pm

This course will teach you how to use your Two-Official skills as a Referee. You will learn when/how to work the line & how to use endzone positioning. You will learn strategies to stay out of the way in the endzone and neutral zone. This course will also help you develop the ability to pursue the play and understand your goals while you follow the play up the ice. The instructor will teach you how to manage stoppages with your voice and eyes as well as how to call penalties to have maximum effect. Finally, you will learn about hotspots, presence, and impact penalties to help prepare you for the Game Management Course.

Sign up for this clinic if you have one year of experience as an official and want to develop your skills as a referee. You could also sign-up for this course if you want to improve your skills as a Linesperson by understanding the skills and roles of a Referee.

This course will also help you develop the ability to pursue the play and understand your job as the back and front Linesman. The instructor will teach you how to manage stoppages to reduce incidents. Finally, you will learn about hotspots and presence to help prepare you for the Game Management Course.

Intro to Game Management Course

Game Management is about more than penalty selection. Therefore, this course is designed to develop a range of skills needed for managing a hockey game:

Managing your emotions on the ice,
-
Using your presence and position to prevent incidents from happening,

Using non-verbal, verbal, and assertive communication,
-
Working with your partner(s) to prevent incidents,
-
Applying impact penalties and impact non-calls to maximize effect.

Beginner Two-Official System Course

This course will help you develop a better understanding of how the positioning of the two-official system allows two officials to maximize their coverage of the ice. Attendees will also be given the opportunity to better understand how procedures allow them to manage stoppages and reduce the risk of incidents from occurs. Finally, the two-official course will prepare officials to transition to the three-official system.

Three-Official Observation Game

Location, Dates & Times: This course will be run twice:

November 21, 2024, Time: 8:15pm, Location: East End #1

January 14, 2025, Time: 7:45pm, Location:Eric Coy Arena

This session will be a U18AA game using three officials in which participants will watch more experienced officials work the game.

There will be mentors watching the game with participants. Mentors are there to answer questions and explain what they are seeing on the ice.
