Hi Everyone,

As we approach the 2024-25 season, we recognize that this offseason has been especially busy with the amalgamation of the AA and AAA divisions under one council. Our dedicated volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to get everything in place, and we hope these efforts will ensure a smooth start to the season.

In the coming weeks, tryouts will begin. This message provides a brief overview of what you can expect during this process.

Tryout Overview

The tryouts for all age groups and skill levels within the AA and AAA programs are designed for consistency and fairness across the city. The format is as follows:

  • Round 1: Includes two skill skates and one scrimmage.
  • Round 2: Consists of intersquad games.
  • Round 3: Involves exhibition games.

(Note: The U18 AAA tryouts follow a slightly different structure. Please refer to the tryout schedule linked below for specific details.)

You can view the complete tryout schedule for all age groups and skill divisions here. Please ensure your child is available for all scheduled skates. The schedule is also accessible on the Hockey Winnipeg, AAA, and AA websites. Due to the high volume of participants, we cannot accommodate requests for specific group assignments.

Registration & Communication via TeamSnap

This season, we are using TeamSnap for registration and communication. All updates and notifications will be sent through TeamSnap. As your child progresses through each round, they will be added to new groups/teams within the app. You will receive notifications when your child is assigned to a group, along with their ice times.

Important Details

  • A few days before the first round, we will release the group assignments for Round 1. Your child must attend all scheduled ice times for their group. Please arrive early to check in and receive a tryout jersey.
  • After Round 1, you will be notified whether your child is advancing to Round 2 or being released from their current skill level. If advancing, they will be assigned to an intersquad team and given their ice times. If released, you will receive information on next steps.
  • After Round 2, the same process will apply, with players either advancing to Round 3 or being released. For those in Round 3, coaches will determine which exhibition games players will participate in. All participants must be ready and available for each game in their zone.
  • Following Round 3, the coaches will draft the teams, and players will be contacted directly with their final status.

Volunteering Opportunities

We understand that this process is new, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we navigate it. Please keep in mind that our volunteers are handling a significant number of inquiries at this time, so we ask for your understanding as we respond as quickly as we can.

If you’re interested in volunteering as a check-in person for any U15 checking clinics or tryout ice times, please reach out to Clifton at VPAAAwinnipeg@gmail.com. Be sure to include the age group and reason for your email.

On behalf of the AA/AAA Council, we look forward to seeing the kids back on the ice. See you at the rink!

Best regards,

AA – AAA Council

Hockey Winnipeg’s Rec Program was created in response to a need for a less competitive playing environment and a less demanding time commitment that exists in community hockey. Hockey Winnipeg will run a U11 and U13 Rec Program with an emphasis on skills development, structured team play with multi-ability teams, a set schedule with a minimal time commitment. The Rec Program encourages and supports good sportsmanship, fair play, friendship, and respect.

We are committed to all of our youth, regardless of background or circumstance, being able to enjoy a healthy sports activity in a positive and safe environment. This may include:

1. continuing players who want to stay in the game,

2. players with other commitments for whom hockey is a ‘second’ activity, and

3. new players who want to try organized hockey.

The U11 and U13 Rec Program will operate once a week from October – March (20 weeks). There will be two arenas hosting the Hockey Winnipeg Rec Program; St. Norbert Community Centre and Transcona East End Community Centre. The Rec Program is open to all age appropriate players regardless of community boundaries.

Registration opens August 1st.

AA/AAA Council is still looking for U15 AA Male Coaches. Please submit your application to development@hockeywinnipeg.ca if interested.

Grandfathering Memo for 2024-2025

Date: June 1, 2024

To: Coaches, Players, and Parents

From: Clifton Dorge, Hockey Winnipeg, Vice-President AAA Hockey
Mike Segal, Hockey Winnipeg, Vice-President AA Hockey

Re: Grandfathered Zone Alignment for the 2024-2025 Season

As we approach the start of a new hockey season, we want to inform you about an important decision regarding our zone alignment policy. After considerable discussions and feedback from our community, the board has decided to implement a grandfathered zone alignment for the upcoming season for the U17/U18 AAA categories only.  This memo will outline what this means to Hockey Winnipeg AAA/AA programs and how it will be applied.

Grandfathered zone alignment means that players who have previously registered and participated in teams within a specific zone for U17/U18 AAA teams only will be allowed to continue playing in their current zones, despite any changes that may have been made to zone boundaries.

  1. Purpose of the Grandfathered Zone Alignment
  • Stability for Players and Families: Ensuring that players can stay with their current teams promotes stability and continuity. This is especially beneficial for young athletes who have already established relationships with their teammates and coaches.
  • Reduced Disruptions: Making immediate changes to zone alignments could disrupt training, team dynamics, and negatively impact player development. A grandfathered approach minimizes these disruptions.
  • Fair Transition: It ensures a fair transition period as we adapt to any new zone boundaries, providing time for players, families, and coaches to adjust to the changes gradually.

  1. Impact and Implementation
  • Current Players: Any U17/U18 AAA player who has been registered and played within a specific zone in the previous season can continue to play in that same zone for the 2024-2025 season. Players in the U15AAA category will need to return to their home zone for the upcoming season, based on the new zone alignments detailed in section IV.
  • New Registrations: New players will be registered according to the newly established zone boundaries as noted in section IV.
  • Duration: The grandfathered alignment will be in place for the duration of the upcoming season, and potentially beyond, depending on further evaluations and community feedback.
  • Transfers: Any requests for transferring zones under the grandfathered policy will be handled on a case-by-case basis, ensuring fairness and transparency.

  • Next Steps

For Players, Coaches and Parents:

  • Verify your assigned zone for the upcoming season by visiting our website hockeywinnipeg.ca or by reviewing the zone alignment section below.
  • If there are any concerns or questions regarding your zone assignment, please reach out to Ben Blankstein, Hockey Winnipeg Program Director at (204) 784-5454 or via email development@hockeywinnipeg.ca.
  • Further information will be provided to everyone involved once all grandfathered players situations have been reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

  1. Zone Alignments

The following agreed upon zone alignments for the 2024-2025 AAA and AA season are based on your home address and area association registrations.  The zones are as follows:

  • Bruins– St Vital Minor Hockey Association (SVMHA), St Boniface Minor Hockey Association (SBMHA), Transcona Minor Hockey Association (TMHA)
  • Thrashers– River East Minor Hockey Association (REMHA), Lord Selkirk Minor Hockey Association (LSMHA), Seven Oaks Minor Hockey Association (SOMHA), St James Minor Hockey Association (SJMHA)
  • Wild– Assiniboine Park Hockey Association (APHA), Fort Garry North Hockey Association (FGNHA), South Winnipeg Hockey Association (SWHA)

  1. Conclusion

We believe that the grandfathered zone alignment will benefit our association as a whole by offering stability and a fair transition while maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of our teams. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

We look forward to a successful and exciting season ahead!
